behind the scenes with UYWI staff
name: Ben Eash
title: Director of Innovative/Creative Solutions & Resources
favorite kind of pizza: Meatlovers - pretty much anywhere. I've been digging on Donatos recently. If you're in the midwest, look them up because the toppings go all the way to the edge (no crust).
favorite sports team/sport: Football is my favorite sport. I had a lot of fun watching the Giants beat the Patriots, but it's because I'm a huge Buffalo Bills fan. I also am a big fan of Ohio State football and basketball, New York Yankees, and Chicago Bulls. (basically I like teams with good histories that choke recently)
I could live without: stress, bad news, unfortunate events, and e-mail forwards.
recent good read/flick (why?):
I'm the father of 2 under 3 (actually, my daughter turns 3 this week), and I recently finished George Barna's Revolutionary Parenting: What the Research Shows Really Works. As with any book, there's things that resonated with me and things I disagreed with, but I think as a parent or a youth worker the takeaways from this book are invaluable.
Barna explains a coaching model of parenting where parents/mentors are WITH them through life, coaching them before during and after the game. The coaching analogy is a valuable metaphor for how we start with a young person where they are at and better them, bring out the best inside of them, and walk with them as they flourish until they are on their own. I'm simplifying it, but this book is based on solid research and the research speaks.
What meant the most to me was Barna's own takeaways and how the research has motivated him to cut back from his busy schedule to make sure his role as parent is his number one priority. As busy people working and doing ministry, the research should show us that nothing is more important than the role we have to bring "our kids" up as men and women of Godly character. That's what I got out of it.
3 to 5 favorite weblinks: (I wish I could share more)
tuaw.com - Unofficlal Apple Weblog, nourishment for Mac geeks.
city-vision.org - Columbus-based urban ministry network headed by Jim Swearingen of CCDA
commonsensemedia.org - media reviews using common sense. I don't agree with everything on there, but it's a decent benchmark.
brainfuel.tv - amazing creative site which is inspirational and informational. I benefit so much from the links.
StrongBad e-mails - after all these years I still crack up at these gems
best tip in ministry: I'll try and keep it simple. The best tip I've ever heard, learned, or experienced is to be youself around kids. The only way I know to do that is to be completely transparent with my kids about my own shortcomings and be honest and admit when I blow it with them or let them down. I think the other valuable thing is to share scripture with kids when you talk to them. Not to be preachy, but to let them know that there's true meaning behind why you do what you do. |
