Chicago School-to-Prison Report

Project NIA is an advocacy center with a mission to address youth crime with restoration rather than incarceration. The study in Chicago found that 20% of all juvenile arrest were school-based; 27% of school-based arrests under age 20 were for minor battery (i.e. fighting); Black youth made up 74% of school based arrest followed by  22.5% Latinos.

Despite proven studies that prove students who have ever been suspended are three times more likely than their peers to drop out of school by the 10th grade, Chicago Public Schools administered 17,020 in school suspensions, 40,662 out-of-school suspensions, and 217 expulsions in the 2010-2011 academic year according to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).

Check out our in-school initiative, Thrive, which trains you in a curriculum proven to improve behavior and decision making skills of at-risk youth, so that you can start a program in a local school.
